| How
high will the standard kit reach? To
keep within the UK Building Regulations, you would need to install
the Karina with an individual tread rise of less than 220mm.
This means that the standard kit of 12 risers will suit a floor to
floor height of up to 2.64m (8' 8")
|
|
| |
| What
happens if my floor height is too high for the standard kit? You
can buy an additional tread kit to reach higher floor heights.
However, you can install a maximum of 2 additional tread kits.
This will reach a maximum floor height of 3.08m (10' 1").

| |
| If
I buy an additional tread kit, which step will I use to start the
Karina?
The
additional tread kit is always supplied with a right hand tread. You
can place this at the start of the staircase (at the bottom) and
finish on a left hand tread, or you can place it at the top of the
staircase and finish on a right hand tread. |
|
| |
| If
I buy two additional tread kits, where will I put them?
As the additional
tread kit is always a right hand tread, you will need to place one
at the bottom and one at the top. |

| Does
the Karina comply with UK Building Regulations?
Part K of the
Building Regulations covers the installation of a staircase with
"alternate treads" for use to access a single room plus an
ensuite (so long as this is not the only toilet in the house), where
there isn't enough room for a standard staircase. It calls for
the staircase to be in a straight flight, to keep within the 220mm
tread rise and to have a handrail on both sides. In practice,
this is often a simple wall-mounted handrail. In our
experience, these regulations are often "relaxed" by the
Building Control department when they take into account the specific
demands of individual projects. However - as always - we do
recommend that you discuss your project with them before committing
to buy the Karina. You can download an extract from Part K of the
Building Regulations from our Services
page. |
| |
| Is
it possible to connect the Karina handrailing to some balustrading
on my top landing?
Yes, you can buy
the matching balustrading kit to use on your stairwell or mezzanine
floor, as shown on the right. You'll find more details on our accessories
page. |
| |
| I
am installing my Karina in a curved shape. What do I do about
railing on the open side?
You can buy a set of railings for
the second side. See our accessories
page for details. |
| |
| I'm
slightly worried about my children slipping on the treads when they
use the staircase with their socks on!
The beech treads
still retain a very slightly grainy texture to them but, if you want
to add some extra non-slip treatment, then buy our special Oakleaf
Clear Grip Strip shown on our accessories
page.
This is a cheap and quick way to add a durable non-slip treatment
that is friendly on bare feet! |
| |
| Do
you have a diagram which shows the different ways to install the
Karina?
Yes, look at the
diagram below. You will get full information with the installation
instructions with your Karina kit but you can also get this on our
website by going to the Installation
page. |

Please note that the
floor to floor height shown on this diagram is outside the UK
regulations which dictate an individual tread rise of 22cm as
discussed above. (For the rest of Europe this is allowable to 23.5cm)
